“Commercial breweries operating in London” means businesses with their own physical brewing kit, on a distinct and separate site within the official Greater London boundary, producing beer that is on sale to the public. Separate brewery sites under the same ownership are counted individually. Where two or more companies share a kit, this is counted as a single brewery. ‘Brewers without breweries’ like cuckoos and contractors are dealt with separately below.

Note that the locality name after the postcode refers to the London borough, which doesn’t necessarily correspond to the locality in common use.

The current figures represent an ongoing decline from the end of 2021, when the numbers shrank from a peak of 132, the first year-on-year decline in brewery numbers in London since 2005, when the figures dropped from 10 to nine. We’re clearly still a long way away from those dark times, but I expect more closures given the current business conditions: knock-on effects of the Covid lockdowns, rising energy and other costs, contraction in the hospitality sector, Brexit. New breweries are still continuing to open but at nowhere near the same rate as before the lockdowns, and it’s been both saddening and significant to see the departure of producers like BBNo, Boxcar, Brick, Canopy, Deviant and Dandy, OMEBEER, Partizan, Solvay Society, and Weird Beard in recent years.

London Breweries map

Please check details before attempting to visit any brewery. Those shown in grey are unable to welcome visitors for various reasons: please respect this. Some are in private homes and in these cases I have deliberately avoided giving an accurate location. Others may have limited public hours or only open for special events or by prior arrangement.

Brewery numbers by London

This table was updated in December 2023 with notable changes at both the top and bottom. Reflecting the decline in as a brewing centre, and the rise of Blackhorse Lane and Leyton/Leytonstone, Waltham Forest is now the London with the most breweries, knocking Southwark off its long-held perch. And the closure of Mad Yank has relegated Hillingdon to the ranks of boroughs with no breweries, of which there are now five.

Brewers without breweries

Numerous businesses without brewing equipment who market their own beer brands made on someone else’s kit, sometimes known as contract or cuckoo brewers, are based in London or use brewing facilities here. The following is a selective list of the most notable examples, several of whom plan to become fully fledged brewers with their own kit at some point.

Suspended breweries

To the best of my knowledge, production at the following breweries is currently suspended, though with at least a chance that it may resume in future.

  1. Babel Beerhouse (Odyssey, formerly Regents Canal) N1, Camden, brewpub, suspended again by December 2023
  2. Big Penny (formerly Truman’s) E17, Tower Hamlets, cuckoo brewing since May 2022
  3. Boxcar Brewery E2, Tower Hamlets, suspended February 2023, cuckoo brewing shortly afterwards
  4. Brewhouse and Kitchen Islington EC1, Islington, brewpub
  5. By the Horns Brewing Co SW17, Wandsworth, brewing continues outside London
  6. Dogs Grandad Brewery SW9, Lambeth, brewery removed by December 2023, continues as cuckoo.
  7. E5 Poplar Bakehouse E14, Tower Hamlets, brewpub, collaboration brews since 2022
  8. Fearless Nomad Brewing (Black Dog) TW8, Hounslow, brewpub, suspended by June 2023
  9. Flat Iron Square (Lagunitas, Heineken) SE1, Southwark, brewpub
  10. Husk Brewing E16, Newham, suspended February 2023
  11. Kentish Town NW5, Camden, no visitors
  12. Macintosh Ales N16, Hackney, cuckoo brewing exclusively since July 2023

  15. Old Fountain Brewhouse EC1, Islington, brewpub
  16. SALT London (Ossett, formerly Hop Stuff) SE28, Greenwich, closed May 2023, brewing continues outside London and may revive on a brewpub scale at one of the SALT bars in London.
  17. Spartan Brewery SE16, Southwark, suspended June 2023, cuckoo brewing, brewing continues on original site as Battersea Brewery.
  18. St Mary’s Brewery NW3, Camden, no visitors
  19. Urban Alchemy Brewing Co EN5, Barnet, no visitors, suspended March 2023.
  20. Volden Brewing SE23, Lewisham, cuckoo brewing since March 2020
  21. Wrong Side of the Tracks SE6, Lewisham, no visitors, occasional cuckoo brewing

Other changes:

Many thanks to all the people who help me keep this list up to date, intentionally or unintentionally, including all the brewers and brewery staff who keep in touch; tweeters, emailers and social networkers too numerous to mention; John Cryne and his predecessor Steve Williams of the London Brewers Alliance, John Paul Adams and Geoff Strawbridge of CAMRA London, Jezza and Steve of Beer Guide London, the eagle-eyed Emma Stump and Rick Pickup of Quaffale.
